If You're Heading to North Creek, Better Grab Your Shades
A community-wide gathering was held June 30 in North Creek to celebrate the economic rebirth of the community, due largely to millions of dollars in public and private investment that will fund a host of projects in and around the old North Creek Ski Bowl.

"I've seen the future and it's in North Creek," proclaimed Johnsburg Supervisor William Thomas. The catchy affirmation was echoed by a variety of government officials and local businessmen who brought good news with them, including:

  • $1.2 million in federal funding from Congressman John Sweeney.
  • $5.5 million in state funding from State Senator Betty Little.
  • $250,000 from National Grid.
  • Front Street Mountain Development expects to invest $200 million in its Ski Bowl Village.
  • Rudd Van Voorhis and Eric Piper plan to invest $20 million, building 60 new homes on Durkin Road.
  • Barton Mines plans to invest $40 million to develop a wind farm at its garnet mine.

No doubt the momentum will attract even more activity as the economic revitalization kicks into high gear. The event drew hundreds of area residents who were keen to see plans and speak face-to-face with developers and others involved, such as the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA).

The Economic Impact Study of the Gore Mountain Project, published by the Office of the New York State Comptroller, estimates at build out the Front Street Ski Bowl Project will have a $40 million impact on the local economy. "This is truly a community development project," said EDC President Len Fosbrook. "We expect these inter-related projects will have a far-reaching and very positive impact on the residents of Warren, Hamilton, and Essex counties. The future certainly is brighter when public and private investors work together to bring about dramatic economic development."
